ONE Championship returns in late July, launching new format

ONE Championship will return with ‘No Surrender’ in Thailand, and is also the most important event in their schedule in the second half of 2020.

Due to the influence of COVID-19, all sports activities in the world have stalled for months. Asia’s largest MMA tournament ONE Championship is no exception. After nearly 4 months of inactivity, this tournament will officially return at the end of July.

On the evening of June 26, the CEO of ONE Championship brought good news to fans of the martial arts world.

“Instead, the event will be broadcast live globally. We will also host another 12 matches of the new ‘ONE Dark Series’ series on this day. This will be a recording rather than a broadcast.”

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the superstars of ONE Championship. The world is suffering the worst crisis in 100 years. Most national borders remain closed throughout Asia. COVID-19 visions and policies in countries change week by week. Therefore, it is difficult to make a solid plan for any event. Thank you to my teammates for your hard work and dedication , ” President Chatri Sityodtong shared on his personal page.

Previously, ONE Championship has also returned to the track with ONE Hero Series 13 and 14. These two events are the first moves of the ONE Championship after the pandemic. ONE Hero Series 13, 14 took place successfully in China on June 19 and 20. This is considered an important stepping stone for the official return of this tournament.

In preparation for this major reboot, ONE Championship had to plan carefully. CEO Sityodtong discussed with government employees and health experts from China, Thailand and Singapore to return to the track as quickly as possible.

“Safety is our top priority. We will not rush back just because of financial commitments to broadcasters, brands and the like. We want to return in an environment where we can be sure that all parties involved are safe”, Sityodtong said.

“Every government has different policies on immigration, as well as on isolation. Therefore, it is a bit difficult to put things back into operation , ” shared ONE Championship CEO.

In order to best prepare for the new schedule, ONE Championship has also tried to manage the capital. According to investment reports, ONE Championship has raised more than US $ 70 million. At the same time, ONE has also restructured its internal organization, cut 20% of its staff to save costs.

With a stable financial background, ONE Championship promises to accelerate their schedules the fastest. In the second half of 2020, they will organize as many matches as possible cautiously.
