Although officially retired in February, the legendary Georges St-Pierre insisted that he could return to fight the defending UFC lightweight champion.
In an interview with the online TV channel DAZN recently, former UFC Middleweight champion GSP explained why he decided to retire.
“I retired, I don’t want to waste time doing one thing over and over again. Signing a contract took away a lot of my things. I am proud of what I have achieved, so once I receive a match, I will try my best because the results are so important. This puts me under a lot of stress.”
“I don’t want to waste 2.3 or even 6 months of training, promoting the event against a not so famous fighter. I don’t want to waste 6 months of pressure, hard training, and the game is not worth it. It’s not just a matter of money, a matter of heritage and a matter of satisfaction.”
GSP then told him why he was targeting UFC champion Lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov.
“That’s why I want to compare gloves with Khabib. If I lose, it will be a memorable defeat, but if I win, it will be a huge victory. If I take the stage with a fighter who isn’t on the same level, I feel more disadvantaged than benefiting. ”
“I also said I want to retire on top of glory. That doesn’t mean I won’t come back, but the UFC kept refusing my match against Khabib forever.”
In addition, GSP also said that the reason he thought the UFC would not allow him to compete with Khabib was because if Khabib lost, GSP would not defend the title against the next candidate. Undeniably this will cause many problems for the UFC.
“Imagine them (UFC) spending a lot of money promoting my game and Khabib and I won. I resumed retiring after that game again, I didn’t want to win against Khabib and then defend the title against other candidates. Even the game doesn’t need to compete for the championship title and go under Catchweight, but UFC has other plans for Khabib”.
