Dustin Poirier was asked to win the title as soon as Khabib retired

The American boxer believes that his weight class should continue once Khabib is no longer interested in returning.

Khabib’s announcement of his retirement created the opportunity for many UFC light boxers to aim for a title, especially his defeats.

In particular, the war at UFC 257, where Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor will face off in the first event of 2021.

This is just a normal match when President Dana White resolves to return to defend the title of Khabib. However, Dustin Poirier wants the UFC to quickly give his chance to compete for the title once Khabib is sure to retire.

“I think if Khabib retires, I will be the next person to be eligible for the title, and that must be the official belt.” – Poirier stressed.

“This weight class must continue. That was my mindset when a month after returning from Khabib’s emotional belt defense, he still kept his opinion”.

“Dana White spoke one way, Khabib said one way, but once he decides to stop, someone has to give the official belt.” – Dustin analyzed.

Despite this wish, the possibility of the match between Dustin and Conor being promoted to the title competition is very low, because in addition, the top two punches Tony Ferguson and Charles Olivera are also competing for the title.

The return of the defeated generals, the martial artists able to compete for the title is the reason why Dustin is more focused on his chances, besides recovering from his defeat to Conor six years ago.

“If the match between me and Conor was not for the championship, I think when I beat him, I deserve to be in the next title.” Dustin said.

In addition to the four names mentioned above, Justin Gaethje, Michael Chandler and Dan Hooker are also martial artists who want to participate in the race. However, the UFC has not announced its intentions for this group of boxers.
